Five years ago, Naoki Kaku and Shoko Toma came to us and asked if we would mind if the brought a team of kite fliers from Hamamatsu Japan to our Berkeley Kite Festival. After thinking about it for about two seconds, I said "are you kidding that would be fantastic!" Since then the Sode-cho Kite-Flying Society of Hamamatsu, Japan, has been a wonderful part of the festival.

Shoko and Naoki formed Tako Age to oversee the funding and organizing of traditional Japanese kites in the Bay Area. Local members of Tako Age meet at the Berkeley Kite Festival site on the third Sunday of each month share the art of their wonderful Machijirushi“ kites, and prepare their themselves for their "Big Show" at the Berkeley Kite Festival at the end of July.

Our thanks to everyone at Tako Age and especially to Naoki and Shoko for making traditional Japanese kites such an exciting part of our Berkeley Kite Festival.
